Learn About Composting Day
Get out your gardening gloves — May 29 is National Learn About Composting Day! We all want to do our part to conserve natural resources and reduce our carbon footprint. Composting is not only an environmentally safe fertilizer but it can help you save water, energy, fuel, and money! It also keeps toxins from getting in our run-off and groundwater through the use of chemical- based commercial fertilizers. The use of a natural fertilizer made from compost will make your garden hospitable to wildlife helpers like honeybees, hummingbirds and of course, worms!
So, what is compost? Compost is organic matter that has decomposed. In a garden, decomposition is a good thing! Compost can be made from kitchen scraps, lawn clippings, newspapers, leaves, wood chips, coffee grinds — almost any food products except for processed foods (no Twinkies in the compost!) and meat or fish products. Composting saves resources and, because of its high nutrient content, improves soil stability and reduces soil-borne diseases. It will help your garden grow lush and promote healthy growth in seedlings and plants. It’s for all these reasons gardeners call compost “black gold”. Composting allows you to accomplish the big environmental three: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
If you live in Bristol, Barrington or Newport, please check out the curbside composting program!
National Ocean Month
National Oceans Month is celebrated each year in June and it’s time to honor the element that is essential to the planet Earth. The ocean is known as the “lungs of the Earth” and very rightly so. It gives us many important foods and medicine. In fact, the majority of the Earth’s oxygen also comes from the ocean. It also keeps the climate in check.

World Recyling Day
May 17th is World Recycling Day, raising awareness about the importance of treating waste and taking a stand for environmental protection. While the celebration began in 1994, UNESCO officially proclaimed it in 2005. Recycling is collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash. It allows turning waste into new products. In this regard, recycling help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, conserve natural resources, prevent pollution, create jobs, support the manufacturing industry, and more. Yet, too many people still don't know what items are and aren't recyclable! Remember: bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard are recyclable. As for organic waste, it should go to a compost bin!

Earth Day
Earth Day is a moment to reflect on our shared responsibility to the land and waters that sustain Eastern Rhode Island—and to recognize the power of local action.
Here in our communities, the challenges facing our environment are real, but so is our ability to respond. When neighbors, schools, farmers, municipalities, and community organizations work together, meaningful change happens close to home.
This Earth Day, the Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District invites residents, students, educators, landowners, and local leaders to stand together in support of clean air, clean water, healthy soils, and resilient ecosystems. Protecting our natural resources is not just a global goal—it’s a local commitment that strengthens our communities, supports working lands, and safeguards the health of people and wildlife across Newport and Bristol Counties.
Together, through practical conservation and community stewardship, we can protect what makes Eastern Rhode Island thrive—today and for generations to come.

World Wetland Day
World Wetland Day
Wetlands protect water quality, reduce flooding, store carbon, and support wildlife. In Bristol and Newport Counties, the Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District works with landowners, farmers, and municipalities to protect and restore wetlands that keep our communities and ecosystems resilient.
International Reducing CO2 Emissions Day
Today is International Reducing CO₂ Emissions Day. Reducing emissions can start right here in Rhode Island.
Through the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Combustion System Improvement (CSI) initiative (under EQIP), farmers and foresters can receive financial and technical assistance to replace old, high-polluting diesel equipment with cleaner, more energy-efficient or electric alternatives.
The impact:
Cleaner air for our communities
Lower greenhouse gas emissions
More efficient, future-ready farm operations
If you’re interested in learning more, contact the local RI NRCS office and connect with Julia Vieira for guidance on eligibility and next steps.
International Reducing CO₂ Emissions Day is a reminder that practical, local solutions are already available.
