August is Water Quality Month

🌊 Did you know?

Narragansett Bay's water quality is shaped by more than just what happens on its shores — it's affected by everything happening upstream, including stormwater runoff and agricultural nutrients that make their way into local streams and rivers before reaching the Bay.

Farmland along waterways like the Sakonnet River plays a direct role in Bay health. That's why the Sakonnet River watershed is a designated USDA priority area for water quality protection — farmers here can apply for USDA NRCS financial assistance to fund practices like cover crops, filter strips, and reduced tillage — all aimed at cutting sediment and nutrient runoff before it reaches the water.

Healthy soil = healthy streams = a healthier Bay. It's all connected. 💧

This #NationalWaterQualityMonth, we're celebrating the East Bay farmers doing the quiet work of protecting Narragansett Bay from the ground up.
